I asked my mom to write down the rules of Bouray…..A favorite card game of my family and her family before….
The number of players are between 5 and 7. You always want to have an odd number of people stay in the game to “save the pot”.
Dealer deals out five cards, turning the fifth card up which determines trumps. The object of the game is to take as many tricks as possible. The player next to the dealer says whether she plays or not and so on around the table. After the entire table decides how many are playing, you then draw cards. You want to have as many trumps as possible. Object now is to bouray as many players as you can. If you have one trick and the ace and king of trumps in your hand, you have to lead it because that give you three tricks and a win.
If an off-suit is led and you have none, you have to play a trump. If next player has none, he has to over trump or play his trump(even if it is less than what the previous player played). If you “reneg” (play the wrong card) you bouray the pot or have to match the amount you set for the bouray. A good rule to set is dealer puts up for everyone ($.50 per person or whatever) and you limit the bouray to $5. Makes big pots. If only five play, it’s a good deal to deal a dummy and let players say whether they want the dummy or not starting with the player next to the dealer. If you have no trumps and want to gamble on the dummy, you take the hand. If three tricks are taken, it’s a winner. If two players get two tricks a piece, it’s a split pot and the pot remains in the middle (no winner). And if a player gets no tricks it’s a bouray
Now you might be saying “What is she talking about” I will be glad to host any bouray game and teach the fine art of Cajun Betting. You will not have a better time. Bring lots of money.
