Kate was selected as one of Five Outstanding Young Houstonians by the Houston Jaycees. Following her dad's diagnosis with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease, (which also claimed her grandmother), Kate became actively involved in the Alzheimer's Association of New York. Upon moving to Houston, she started the Powder-Puff "Blondes vs. Brunettes fundraiser. The first year she raised $3,000 and last year she raised $186,000. Kate is a force to be reckoned with. Governor Mark White was the keynote speaker and mentioned how Kate, at the tender age of 6, found the "golden egg" at the annual Easter egg hunt, even though Kate was not supposed to be in the group that found the "egg". (Kate said in her speech that it is due to her mother's influence who told her "she could do anything in life that she wanted to ").
We watched a short video about Kate when she won her award. Every speaker said she was a dynamo, could solve any problem and was one of the youngest members ever elected to the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer's Association in Houston and Southeastern Texas. Then Kate spoke. She was very gracious and humble and then got choked up when she spoke about her dad. Every person in the audience was feeling what she felt. I don't think there was a dry eye in the audience. Thank you Kate for helping us what Alzheimer's can do to a family and the way you dealt with the disease. I applaud your moxie and your efforts in striving to find a cure for Alzheimer's Disease, but mostly I applaud you for being the wonderful person that you are.
